12 Shows in February in Madrid

from the 18th to the 28 Februar y, 2010  "Poeta en Nueva York" by Blanca Li will be presented at the Teatros del Canal of Madrid (Spain). The large-sized production has already elated more than 100.000 spectators in Granada and Paris.

For Blanca Li it is an occasion to stage a group of ten flamenco and jazz musicians, and twentyone dancers from contemporary, flamenco and hip hop background. The theme is the cultural shock faced by Federico Garcia Lorca during his travel from native Granada to New York and La Havana in 1929-1930, during the economical crisis. It is a very strong source of inspiration and energy for Blanca, who herself is a native from Granada and has studied in NY. With her dance and her choreography, Blanca Li has obtained the share the more difficult, which isn’t ever in the minimalist gesture or the ephemeral occurrence: she goes straight to the root of the spectacle, towards ressources of the tradition, she goes up to their height, she gives them life, and offers them to the public in a wrapped sensuality. Blanca Li has choreographed and directed for the Opéra de Paris, the New York Met and the Biennale de Lyon. The former ballet-directrice at Komische Oper Berlin has worked as a resident choreographer at the Opéra Massy and the Théâtre National de Chaillot. In recognition of her innovative contributions to contemporary dance, Blanca Li has won the Manuel de Falla Award, the Globe de Christal and the Premio Max and was named Chevalier de l´Ordre du Mérite and Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

«Medalla de oro al mérito en las Bellas Artes» / Gold Medal of Merit of Fine Arts (2009): The King of Spain annually presents the prestigious award a score of major figures of culture and arts. Blanca Li is the third choreographer to receive this recognition after Maurice Béjart and Alicia Alonso.
